Ledbetter smashes 100 meter record for SC

By BOB HOVEY

Six records fell Thursday at the Southwestern College Track and Field Invitational, not surprising, two of them went to Builder women.

With the quality of athlete at the meet, two of those six records were bested by more than one competitor in the same race.

With just two days of practice coming off a basketball team which finished in the upper echelon of the KCAC for the first time ever, Nicole Ledbetter took two tenths of a second off her previous school record of 11.8 with a fast 11.6 timing.

Ledbetter’s clocking was also a new meet record, surpassing Sherlyn Welde from Emporia State in 1991 and tying the Stadium record of 11.6 by Barton County’s Dana Collins in 1993.

The other record to fall to a local athlete went in the 110 meter hurdles where Cari Plumley erased Rene Zimmerman’s 14.4 ran in 1993. Plumley is red shirting for the Builders and ran unattached.

"All things considered weather wasn’t as bad as it could have been." Coach Mike Kirkland commented. " Given the conditions we probably opened up as well as we did last year."

"Just setting down and going through the events I think we opened where we were capable of going. Nicole and Cari were our highlights of course. Between those two you have five All-American performances so you can come to expect that. You can go to a meet and expect that they are going to run at that level each and every meet."

"Nicole has only been working out for two quality days and has a lot of God given ability."

"Ngan Nguyen in the hurdles her indoor season was much farther ahead of last year. She opened up faster than she did last year in the outdoor season."

"With our women’s 4x100 we have two new people and have worked out with two days of exchanges. Our main objective for this meet was not to leave it (the baton) on the ground and with the feedback we have from this week, we can make corrections and I think that relay has the potential to be as good as it was last year and that team was fairly good."

"Tanie McLean was a good inspiration today. She ran unattached indoors and only ran two races. Her 60.9 in the open quarter was a pleasant surprise for her first met."

"Stacy Kahrs opened last year with a 2:26 in the 800 meters. Today she ran a 2:19.8 and broke the meet record, even if she got second in the race. She is setting herself up for an awful good outdoor season. A very versatile runner.

Distance runner, Misty Cunningham has put in her time hitting the pavement.

" Misty ran her second 5,000 ever’" Kirkland said. That is a carry over from a great indoor season." Another red shirt who was competing unattached, Christin Schmidt won the long jump, tying Char Tacha of Southwestern at 16-03.75, winning on second best jump.

"A huge improvement for both of them," Kirkland said. "Char has spent a good deal of the year rehabbing from a quad tear so that was a big start. "

The field events also saw the Lady Builders scoring.

"Geana Schleager in the women’s hammer at 127-8 is a great start for her this year. She is now about where she ended the season last year."

Amy Honcek second in the High Jump at 5.2 is another good start for the Builders, and in the long hurdles, Julie Woolf, with two days of practice on the hurdles ran a real good race," Kirkland commented. "While I had good expectations for her a month or two from now I was kind of amazed at how well she adapted to those this season. That is a tough transition from the high school hurdles and probably the toughest event in a meet to run."

Truman State took home the other records. Beth Luebberling knocked down Rachel Rios record in the 5,000 to 18:10.4. Cammie Ewing ran the 800 in 2:19.6*, the four by 100 relay team ran a 48.6 to break Southwesterns record of 49.0 set just last year and Lauren Dorsey finished off the hurdle record with a 64.7 in that event.
